Sophisticated packaging innovations go beyond basic compliance requirements.
As the cannabis consumer market matures, so too does the packaging. The cannabis packaging sector is evolving to be about more than just basic compliant packaging. Cannabis brands are now designing smart packaging that considers consumer habits, common complaints, and consistency issues.
After a decade in the hands of consumers, legal cannabis packaging needs a shakeup. Why? Three basic reasons:
- Not everyone (especially new consumers) knows how to get the dose right.
- Although lab testing is a legal requirement, greater consistency and reliability are needed from one batch to the next, especially in medical markets.
- Consumers are demanding more straightforward and cleaner methods beyond rolling joints, packing bowls and doling out dabs.
The industry is now experiencing a metamorphosis when it comes to packaging. The following are only a few of the most exciting changes that have recently taken place in how cannabis is dispensed, dosed, and packaged.
3 INNOVATIONS IN CANNABIS PACKAGING
Dablicator from Jetty Extracts
Liquid extracts are sticky, messy, and often challenging to dose. Yet, for people who love a larger hit of THC, concentrates are among the tastiest solutions. Jetty Extracts has listened and, as a result, launched the Dablicator as a clean, precise method of making the concentrate experience user-friendly.
The large pen-shaped device is a zero-waste oil applicator that contains up to 1.2 ml of liquid extract. The Dablicator is ergonomic and dispenses with one hand.

Its heat-resistant metal dispensing tip is perfect for a Direct-Dab, straight into the nail. For those who appreciate flowers, the device easily dispenses liquid for sealing a joint (aka Twaxing) or dropping into a packed bowl. It also promises ease of dosing for edible lovers, including direct sublingual applications.
What separates the Dablicator from a typical concentrate syringe is the dosing mechanism, which operates through a twist-and-click format. Users set their dose, then dispense. There is also no liquid left within the tip, a common complaint with syringes.
Jetty Extracts offers the Dablicator as a complete turnkey solution to concentrate producers, including customizable hardware, packaging, and marketing materials, under their Brand Partner Program.
Stem and Elon from E1011 Labs
E1011 Labs is combining pre-roll joints with a non-combustion device to revolutionize the traditional smoke session. The Elon is the base component, an intelligently designed ceramic rechargeable vaporizer. E1011 Labs calls it the first button-free CBD delivery device, using an innovative breath-activated heating element. Paired with their in-house pre-rolls, called Stems, they have carried a rudimentary consumption method into the 21st century.
Stems come perfectly and consistently packed, in a format reminiscent of a cigarette package but, of course, without the tobacco. E1011 Labs is currently focusing on CBD flower and offering two Stem options: Relax and Uplift.
Users place each Stem into the Elon non-combustible device for a single session. It’s waste-free, and every session is repeatable. What’s more? In a world with ongoing issues with inconsistent and problematic lab testing, every batch of Stems comes with stringent dual testing.
Smart Patch by RYAH Group
Outside of edible, smokeable, and vapable packaging, RYAH has recently launched a product called the Smart Patch, designed to deliver plant-based formulations via the skin.
Unlike other patches common within the pharmaceutical industry, this patch connects with an application for controllable and highly customizable delivery.
The Patch Brain sits on top of the patch itself and connects via Bluetooth to a mobile application. Consumers can schedule ‘Boosts’ as well as more on-demand relief.
The Patch is linked to a QR code to provide specific formulation details to the app. Together, this creates a detailed picture of what formulations work, in what dose, and for what duration.
This innovative packaging could revolutionize the delivery of plant-based formulas, including cannabinoids, for medical patients. The high degree of control and product consistency available through this format could even be useful within Clinical Trials.

CLEANER, MORE PRECISE, AND STILL COMPLIANT
These three companies are at the forefront of changes to cannabis packaging. Yet, they are far from the only businesses leading the way for changing the way people buy and consume this plant. Cannabis packaging will undoubtedly go through several more fascinating iterations in the next decade as legalization spreads across the US and abroad.
